  • Geogard 221

Why I stock it: Any product containing water needs protection from bacteria, yeast, and mold. Geogard 221 is one of the preservative systems I use for water based formulas.

What it does: Protects the product while it is being stored and used.

Where I use it: Toners, facial mists, serums, moisturizers, and other water based formulas.

Why the formula needs it: A preservative is not filler. Without one, a water based product can become unsafe long before you can see or smell a problem.

  • Optiphen

Why I stock it: Optiphen gives me another preservative option because no single preservative system fits every formula.

What it does: Helps protect selected products from microbial growth.

Where I use it: Water based products, emulsions, masks, and selected customized formulas.

Why the formula needs it: The preservative has to match the complete formula, including its ingredients, texture, and pH.

  • Polysorbate 20

Why I stock it: Essential oils do not mix evenly into water on their own. Polysorbate 20 helps disperse them through the product.

What it does: Helps prevent essential oil from floating in concentrated droplets on top of a toner or mist.

Where I use it: Toners, facial mists, atmosphere mists, and selected aromatic products.

Why the formula needs it: Shaking a bottle does not keep essential oil permanently dispersed. A proper solubilizer makes the formula more consistent.

  • Xanthan Gum

Why I stock it: Xanthan gum gives me control over the thickness and stability of water based products.

What it does: Thickens formulas and helps keep powders or other ingredients suspended.

Where I use it: Toners, serums, cleansers, masks, and moisturizers.

Why the formula needs it: Without enough structure, some formulas would separate, settle, or feel too thin.

What it does: Creates and stabilizes an emulsion.

What it does: Forms a gel when mixed with the proper ingredients.

Why the formula needs it: It creates the structure that allows the mask to set and lift away in one flexible layer.

  • Calcium Sulfate

Why I stock it: Calcium sulfate helps alginate masks set correctly.

What it does: Supports the reaction that turns the wet mask mixture into a firm gel.

Where I use it: Alginate and peel off masks.

Why the formula needs it: Without the correct setting ingredient, the mask may remain soft, sticky, or fail to set.

Why the formula needs it: A powder cleanser needs a surfactant if it is expected to cleanse rather than only exfoliate.

  • Jojoba Oil

Why I stock it: Jojoba is one of the most versatile oils I use. It is lightweight, stable, and works for dry, oily, sensitive, and breakout prone skin without making every formula feel greasy.

Why I might choose it for you: When your skin needs a more protective layer than a lightweight lotion can provide.

  • Sunflower Oil

Why I stock it: Sunflower oil gives me a lightweight, practical oil that supports softness without taking over the whole formula.

What it helps with: Dryness, softness, and supporting a more nourishing moisturizer.

Where I use it: Selected moisturizers.

Why I might choose it for you: When your skin needs more nourishment than a basic daily moisturizer provides.

  • Pink Rose Petals

Why I stock it: Rose petals come from plants in the Rosa genus and are valued for their fragrance, natural color, and long history in cosmetic and aromatic preparations. Pink petals can range from very pale blush to deeper rose depending on the variety and growing conditions.

What it helps with: Rose petal extracts have been studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, including their potential to help calm inflammatory responses in the skin. These findings apply to prepared extracts, not to the decorative dried petals inside a finished bottle.

Where I use it: Oils, aromatherapy products, roll-ons, and selected body care products.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want to include a recognizable floral ingredient with a softer natural color and a history of use in skincare and aromatic preparations.

  • Red Rose Petals

Why I stock it: Red rose petals come from the same broad Rosa genus but offer a deeper natural color than pink petals. Rose petals have long been used in fragrance, rose water, food, and traditional preparations.

What it helps with: Extracts and distilled preparations made from rose petals have been linked to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Research is still more limited than the marketing around rose sometimes suggests, and the decorative petals in the bottle are not included as a treatment ingredient.

Where I use it: Oils, aromatherapy products, roll-ons, and selected body care products.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want the visible floral detail to have a deeper color while still connecting to rose's long history in body care and fragrance.

  • Calendula Petals

Why I stock it: Calendula, or Calendula officinalis, is an annual or biennial plant native to the western Mediterranean. Its flowers are recognized for their bright yellow and orange petals and their long history in herbal skin preparations.

What it helps with: Properly prepared calendula flower products have traditionally been used for minor skin inflammation and to support the healing of minor wounds. These uses are based mainly on long-standing traditional use rather than strong clinical evidence.

Where I use it: Oils, bath products, body care products, and selected customized formulas.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want to include a warm, recognizable flower with a real history in products made for dry, uncomfortable, or easily irritated skin.

  • Cornflower Petals

Why I stock it: Cornflower, or Centaurea cyanus, is an annual flowering plant native to the central and eastern Mediterranean region. It became widely established in European grain fields and is recognized for its fine, vivid blue petals.

What it helps with: Cornflower flowers have traditionally appeared in herbal preparations for minor eye irritation and inflammation. Some laboratory research has also reported anti-inflammatory activity, but loose decorative petals do not provide a treatment benefit inside a finished product.

Where I use it: Oils, roll-ons, aromatherapy products, and selected customized products.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want to include a real flower with a long history of traditional use and a naturally vivid blue color.

  • Jasmine Buds

Why I stock it: Jasmine belongs to the Jasminum genus, a large group of shrubs and vines known for fragrant flowers. Common jasmine, Jasminum officinale, is native from the Transcaucasus region through parts of Central and South Asia and has long been used in fragrance, food, tea, and traditional preparations.

What it helps with: Jasmine flowers and extracts have been investigated for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, but most evidence is laboratory based and depends on the species and preparation used. The dried buds inside a product are included as a visible detail rather than as a therapeutic dose.

Where I use it: Oils, aromatherapy products, roll-ons, and selected body care products.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want a small, fragrant flower with a long history in perfumery and traditional preparations.

  • Lavender Buds

Why I stock it: Lavender belongs to the Lavandula genus in the mint family and is known for its fragrant purple flower spikes. Lavender species are native mainly to warmer, drier parts of Europe and the Mediterranean region.

What it helps with: Lavender flower and lavender oil preparations have traditionally been used for mild stress, restlessness, and supporting sleep. Those uses relate to prepared herbal or aromatic products, not simply to decorative dried buds inside a bottle.

Where I use it: Oils, aromatherapy products, bath products, roll-ons, and selected body care products.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want to include a familiar aromatic flower with a long-standing connection to relaxation and evening routines.

  • Lupine Petals

Why I stock it: Silvery lupine, Lupinus argenteus, is a western North American perennial with blue to violet flowers. It grows in forests, meadows, and open sagebrush country throughout much of the western United States.

What it helps with: Lupines belong to the legume family and contribute to their environment by forming relationships with soil bacteria that fix nitrogen. Their flowers also support pollinators. Lupine should not be presented as a casual herbal remedy because some species and plant parts contain potentially toxic alkaloids.

Where I use it: Atmosphere mists, seasonal products, and selected aromatic products.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want to include a western wildflower with a clear connection to open meadows, mountain landscapes, and native pollinators.

Why I stock it: Arrowleaf balsamroot, or Balsamorhiza sagittata, is a native western North American perennial known for large yellow flowers and arrow-shaped leaves. It is commonly found in open grasslands, sagebrush country, and dry mountain slopes.

What it helps with: Arrowleaf balsamroot supports native pollinators and provides spring and summer forage for wildlife. The plant also has a documented history of food and medicinal use among Indigenous peoples of western North America, although those traditional preparations are very different from dried petals used decoratively in a product.

Where I use it: Atmosphere mists, seasonal products, and selected aromatic products.

Why I might choose it for you: When I want to include a bright western wildflower with a genuine connection to the landscape and ecology that inspired the product.

Where I use it: Sweet Almond Botanical Oil, Geranium Botanical Aromatherapy Oil, and the Geranium, Palmarosa, and Lavender Roll On.

Where I use it: Apricot Kernel Botanical Oil and the Orange and Frankincense Roll On.

Why I might choose it for your product: When the product has a warm, bright, or citrus direction and carnelian supports the more energizing character of the blend.

  • Obsidian

Why I stock it: Obsidian is naturally formed volcanic glass with a smooth black appearance. It is traditionally associated with grounding, protection, and strength.

What it adds: A dark gemstone detail with a direct visual connection to Yellowstone's volcanic landscape.

Where I use it: Yellowstone Atmosphere Mist and selected Yellowstone inspired products.

Why I might choose it for your product: When the product is built around Yellowstone and the black volcanic glass fits both the landscape and the grounded, woodsy character of the blend.

About Finished Bases

Some Back Bar products begin with a professionally manufactured base that I select and then customize around your skin, routine, and product preferences.

A finished base may already contain supporting ingredients such as emulsifiers, preservatives, oils, vitamins, botanical extracts, or texture ingredients.

This ingredient library explains the ingredients I intentionally stock, select, and work with. It does not replace the complete INCI list for a finished product.

The full ingredient list for an individual formula should always appear on its product label or product page.
